WATCH: 4 key votes tonight for Sandusky city commissioners
Monday morning update, March 23, 2026
SANDUSKY — While the national headlines focus on fiscal cliffs and federal gridlock, the Sandusky City Commission is moving on a packed agenda tonight that hits everything from your backyard to the Lake Erie shoreline.
Here are the four stories we’re tracking at City Hall:
1. The ‘Fix It or Lose It’ law
Fire Chief Mario D’Amico is pushing a second reading of a law that puts a ticking clock on vacant commercial buildings. If an owner wants to keep a building empty, they now have to prove they have the cash in the bank to eventually fix it. No more “placeholder” development plans—the city wants proof of financial ability or a demolition permit.
2. The $2.75 million shoreline bet
The city is officially chasing a $1.25 million H2Ohio grant to kickstart the Lions Park Shoreline project. This isn’t just about stopping erosion; it’s the first major step toward a nature-based “wetland” solution that could eventually bring a functional public beach back to the West Side for the first time in decades.
3. The $1.1 million road map
If you feel like your street is overdue for a pave, tonight is the night. The Commission is set to award a $1.1 million contract to Gerken Paving for the 2026 Local Street Resurfacing Project. This is funded by Issue 8 dollars—your local tax investment returning directly to your neighborhood.
4. Building the ‘Welcome Home’ bridge
In a unique move, the city is facilitating the purchase of 923 Ogontz St. for $285,000 via a state grant, only to sell it to a local resident for $160,000. This $125k “buy-down” is part of the Welcome Home Ohio program, aimed at putting homeownership within reach for residents who have been priced out of the current market.
