A 500-foot shadow: Sheriff withholds records in Reer family death

Corbin refuses to answer questions about destroyed evidence

NORWALK — Just 500 feet from the site where Fred Reer Jr. murdered Amanda Dean in 2017, the death of a Reer family member four years ago remains shrouded in secrecy.

The Huron County Sheriff’s Office is currently withholding key public records related to the April 2021 death of Douglas Reer Sr., the uncle of the convicted murderer. Despite a ruling of suicide by Coroner Jeff Harwood, the evidence—or lack thereof—paints a picture of an investigation that experts describe as “grossly deficient” and “highly suspect.”

A pattern of forensic failure

While the Sheriff’s Office has released some reports, it has refused to provide the 911 call recordings, crime scene photos, or the recordings of suspicious phone calls provided by the family. What is known, however, suggests a crime scene that was compromised from the start:
