SANDUSKY — The old S.S. Kresge Co. building at 202 Columbus and Market Streets was never vacant, even through the difficult times when downtown resembled a ghost town more than a vibrant business district.

On Thursday, a crew from Brady Signs installed a new large slide sign on the building’s exterior. In the last few years, the building has undergone a near complete makeover, newly painted, new windows, new interior and with a thriving business inside — the Small City Taphouse restaurant.

A slide sign is ac type of signage that mounts perpendicular to a building’s facade, jutting out from the wall to increase visibility for businesses, especially in areas with heavy foot traffic or limited storefront visibility. They are double-sided signs, and the Small City Taphouse sign is the fourth slide sign installed in recent years on downtown buildings. Daly’s Pub, at Columbus and Water Street, the old Register building at West Market and Jackson streets and J Bistro restaurant on West Market Street are the other three locations with slide signs.

Stone Building

The southeast corner of Columbus Avenue and East Market Street is known as
Stone’s Block, according to Sandusky Library Archives Research Center.
