HURON TWP. — A car dealership announced on Saturday that it will close due to property acquisition and restrictions that are part of the U.S. 6 corridor improvement project.
“Last month, we met with an ODOT representative about the upcoming roundabout,” McGraw Auto Sales & Service posted in the announcement. “The start date and duration of the construction remain uncertain, but we have been told that access to our dealership will be permanently restricted, and almost all of our display lot will be unavailable to us throughout the entirety of construction due to temporary easements.”
Jon and Danielle McGraw opened the dealership at 2112 Cleveland Road W. (U.S. 6) in 2022. The dealership is at the southwest corner of Cleveland and Rye Beach roads, where one of five traffic circles, or roundabouts, is planned.
Construction along the 5.75-mile stretch between Huron and Sandusky is scheduled to begin in the spring and take three years to complete.
The couple said it was a difficult decision to close the dealership.
“We are so grateful for your support over the past three years,” they thanked customers in the announcement.
The corridor improvement plan, a $27 million federally funded infrastructure project, will replace traffic signals at the Rye Beach Road exit off Ohio 2 and at Cleveland and Rye Beach roads with traffic roundabouts. Roundabouts also are planned for Camp and at Perkins Avenue and Cleveland Road, and at Causeway Drive.
In all 72 parcels are being impacted by the land acquisition efforts for the plan. The Ohio Department of Transportation has settled with some of the property owners, is in negotiations with others and has 16 eminent domain court cases pending to acquire the portions of properties it needs. There is $5.6 million set aside to acquire the properties.
