COLLINS, Ohio — Fred Reer Jr. had at least some help keeping it secret that he killed Amanda Dean inside a shack off Wells Road in July 2017. Fred sawed her body apart and burned her remains, according to prosecutors.

Fred walked free for the next 6½ years despite the heinous act he committed, despite having assaulted Dean at least once previously — and despite the enormous bloody mess killing Amanda created. A mountain of evidence.

But Huron County Sheriff Todd Corbin never knocked on Fred’s door, never contacted, called or interviewed him after Amanda’s family reported her missing just a day or so after Fred Killed her, telling Corbin they feared he would kill her.

Behind the door he didn’t knock on was a bloody mattress and bloody rags, everywhere, according to one witness. But after talking to the family Corbin said he talked with a local domestic violence shelter and was assured Amanda was alive and safe. He closed his investigation right there and right then, and never looked back. He never knocked on Fred’s door.
