City officials asked for 'kids center' update

SANDUSKY โ Concerns about whether there is room at a new city new fitness center for the current kids programming at Mills School became more pronounced after city commission received a project update on July 27.
The new center, which is under construction near the new tennis courts at Rockwell Street and Hayes Avenue near the underpass, is on target for completion and on budget, community development director Colleen Gillson told commissioners.
But the report offered no insight to any information about how the kids programming at Mills School will be transitioned there when construction is finished and the center is ready to open next year. Itโs not clear that the city intends to continue the programming as it now exists.
One former city employee who recently retired from the rec department said city officials making decisions about the new center havenโt reviewed the program or talked with staff about the move, or made staff members feel involved in the process.
โYou heard what she said. She called it a โfitness center.โ Thatโs what it is,โ Patricia โGranny Patโ Marshall told StayTunedSandusky.com, referring to Gillsonโs project update to commission. โThis is a fitness center. Itโs not a kids center.โ
Gillson did refer to it that way during her presentation.
โThe open fitness area will be constructed with an 8 millimeter target drop zone, rolled rubber athletic floor, and the cardio equipment is, I believe, under purchase order,โ she told commissioners, ticking off the buildingโs features, โtwo basketball courts, with four volleyball courts, and an option for pickleball.โ
She did not mention the kids programming during the presentation. Marshall said sheโs concerned about the cityโs commitment to the kids programming. Other city staff who were approached declined comment. The city has contracted its communications with the community since the vote, limiting the number of committee meetings and failing to followup on questions that havenโt been answered.
