DC lawmakers slow responding to Social Security forum invite
Audience participation Q&A scheduled; make reservations now to attend by calling 419-504-0585
SANDUSKY — If you’re looking for love you might want to look for it somewhere other than in Washington. The local press has been waiting to interview both Ohio’s U.S. Senators since they took office in January 2025.
“It’s frustrating because that’s where this problem needs to be fixed,” said Sue Daugherty, executive director of Serving Our Seniors. “In Washington. Lawmakers need motivated and we need to motivate them.”
The staffs for U.S. Sen. Jon Husted and U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno have been stiff-arming reporter—and, it turns out—the area’s premiere service agency for older residents. Daugherty said she’s also been asking Husted (since early 2025) and Moreno (since February) about coming to Sandusky to discuss what they intend do to save Social Security and Medicare.
The staffs for U.S. Sen. Jon Husted and U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno have been stiff-arming reporters—and, it turns out—the area’s premiere service agency for older residents. Daugherty said she’s also been asking Congresswoman Kaptur, Husted (since early 2025) and Moreno (since February) about coming to Sandusky to discuss what they intend do to save Social Security and Medicare.
The Social Security Trust Fund is heading toward the proverbial cliff—the point at which payout exceeds revenue—which spells disaster for older residents who rely on their benefits to pay their bills. Monthly benefits could be automatically cut by as much as 23%, $230 for every $1,000 recipients collect today. Instead of going up to match inflation, the revenue shortfall will force beneficiaries to accept a household-budget busting, promises-breaking reverse COLA.
Kaptur, D-Toledo, has made clear in the past her full support for restoring and preserving Social Security and Medicare. She also has agreed to attend the forum remotely if the House is in session June 25, which it is scheduled to be.
The forum is designed to pin lawmakers down on what they intend to do to preserve the programs. Husted and Moreno have declined to say if they will participate or attend the forum, or if they will send a representative.
The Future of Social Security & Medicare forum, OVER THE CLIFF: What happens when Social Security starts running out of money in 2032? is from 3-4:30 p.m. June 25, 2026, at the UAW Hall, 3114 Hayes Ave., Sandusky. Make reservations by calling Serving Our Seniors reservation line, 419-504-0585.
