SANDUSKY — The U.S. Department of Justice has notified county boards of elections in Franklin, Medina, and Cuyahoga counties that federal monitors will observe local polling operations on Election Day.
The notifications, initially reported by The Statehouse News Bureau, were emailed by DOJ Civil Rights Division trial attorney James Catania, who is serving as regional coordinator. Catania said that monitors will focus strictly on observing election mechanics and will not interfere with voters or polling operations
.According to official letters sent to the counties, the observers are checking compliance with key federal statutes, including the Voting Rights Act, the National Voter Registration Act, the Uniformed and Overseas Absentee Voting Act,and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
While federal election observation is a standard practice—Cuyahoga County hosted DOJ monitors during the 2020, 2022,and 2024 elections—this year’s deployment comes amid broader scrutiny as part of an expanded federal oversight effort spanning multiple states.
