Drivers must detour to get to Causeway
Roundabout construction at Cleveland Road and Cedar Point Drive slows traffic; job to finish just in time
SANDUSKY — Drivers in Sandusky should prepare for a significant shift in traffic patterns at Cleveland Road (US-6)and Cedar Point Drive. Effective immediately, the intersection has been reduced to one lane, with 2-way traffic managed by temporary signals.

Detours
Lane Shift: Traffic on Cleveland Road is being routed through the southern portion of the newly constructed roundabout. This shift allows crews to focus on completing the center and northern sections of the project.
Cedar Point Drive Closure: Access to Cedar Point Drive from Cleveland Road remains fully closed.
Detour Route: Drivers are directed to use Sycamore Line to Fifth Street to access Cedar Point Drive.
Timeline: The roundabout is scheduled to open to traffic by May 8, with the entire project reaching full completion in Fall 2026.
Cleveland Road Corridor
The ongoing construction is part of a multi-year infrastructure initiative aimed at modernizing one of Sandusky’s busiest gateways. The intersection of Cleveland Road and Cedar Point Drive has historically struggled with congestion, particularly during the peak summer tourism season when traffic surges toward the peninsula.
Key Objectives of the Project:
Safety Improvements: The transition from a traditional signalized intersection to a multi-lane roundabout is designed to reduce the severity of accidents and eliminate high-speed T-bone collisions.
Improved Traffic Flow: Roundabouts allow for a more continuous flow of vehicles, reducing the long idling times previously seen during peak hours at the Cedar Point entrance.
Infrastructure Modernization: Beyond the pavement, the project includes extensive utility relocations—water, sewer, and electrical lines—ensuring the corridor can support future development.
Connectivity: The Fall 2026 completion will include enhanced pedestrian and bike access, aligning with the city’s broader goal of making the waterfront area more accessible to non-motorized travel.
Construction remains on schedule, but motorists are encouraged to leave early and anticipate delays while the temporary signals are in place.
