Erie County commissioners talk about historic tax cut for seniors
With new authority, they expand Homestead credit and enact owner occupied credit
SANDUSKY — County commissioners voted 2–1 Tuesday to expand the county’s Homestead credit program and create a new owner-occupied homeowners credit for residents age 65 and older.
The measure, which will take effect in the 2026 tax year, is designed to provide targeted property tax relief for older residents with incomes under $40,000 a year.
Commissioners Pat Shenigo and Matt Old voted in favor of the plan, while Steve Shoffner cast the lone dissenting vote, citing concerns about timing and long-term sustainability.
“I think this is an opportunity to help people who are struggling in our community. It’s not widespread. It’s for people who live in their houses, and senior citizens who make under $40,000 a year,” said Old, who has made lowering taxes a top priority. “It’s about as targeted as you can get to people who need it and are going to benefit something.”
