HURON — Nearly two weeks since the district received a report clearing school employees of failing to protect female students from harassment and aggressive sexual behavior in the schools, Huron school board members have maintained a cone of silence.

📖 Read Brode Report BELOW

Board members Stacey Hinners, Dr. Elizabeth Laffay, Stacey Hartley and Chris Rager have made no public comment since a closed-door meeting Dec. 15.

They adjourned the meeting to meet privately, and after about 20 minutes in executive session, returned to the open meeting, at which time board member Stacy Hinners read from a prepared statement.

She announced that the board received the report from Venice Solutions Group, a firm hired to investigate allegations of sexual harassment among coaches, police officers and school staff.

There was no public discussion about the report or or vote to approve accepting it, or about paying for it. There also wasn’t any vote on agreeing to read from the prepared statement. Board members did not provide any feedback about the findings, although Hinners, reading from the statement, said the matter is closed.

It’s unknown who wrote the statement, or when, or if Venice Solutions Group provided it to the board, or if the board approved the statement during the closed-door session, which likely would be improper. Executive sessions are for discussions; votes are only allowed in open session.

Here is the 25-page report, written by David Brode, an assistant Portage County prosecutor who works for the Venice Soultions Group, (VSG):
