Is Cedar Point Causeway bridge sinking?
New road won't get build until next year
SANDUSKY — Drivers using the Cedar Point Causeway may notice traffic diversions this fall, but the city says the work is not part of a city project.
City Manager John Orzech said maintenance and utility work are behind the current closures.
“The bridge and causeway road work are handled by Cedar Point, not the city,” Orzech said. “Traffic is being diverted for several reasons, maintenance work that needs completed and there is gas line work under the roadway that the contractors prefer no traffic while this is being completed. The diversion is when the park is closed and the causeway is completely opened when the park is in operation.”
There has been speculation for several years that portions of the causeway were deteriorating at a rapid pace and have been in need of repair. Park officials have not commented, however, and generally do not respond to inquiries from reporters about critical issues. Park spokesman Tony Clark did not respond to questions sent to him earlier on Tuesday.

Longer-term, a full reconstruction of the causeway is expected to begin a year from now. Orzech said the project belongs to Cedar Point, not the city, though the city is returning $1.25 million in admissions and parking taxes over 22 years to the amusement park under Ordinance 25-166.
The project will include five lanes, a bike and pedestrian path from First Street to the causeway entrance, and a new bridge. Final design work is not complete, but Orzech said the overall cost will likely exceed $35 million for permits, design and construction.
