Is Sandusky really committed to kids programming at new recreation center?
Not much interest shown during planning process
SANDUSKY — There’s been great progress building the new city recreation center on Rockwell Street near the Hayes Avenue underpass, but it remains unclear if the city can successfully integrate both a rec center and a youth center under one roof.
One thing is clear: recent purchase orders show the city is fully committed to the fitness side of the facility. Treadmills, other cardio exercise machines, and other commercial-grade gym equipment ordered in the spring at a cost of $289,000 is already starting to arrive. The center is expected to open in 2027.
No other equipment purchase orders have been approved, according to Community Development Director Colleen Gilson. Although three years have passed since voters approved an operating levy for the center, no decisions have been made regarding planning, programming, personnel, or how youth programming at Mills School will transition to the new facility.
