Lake intake pipes frozen solid; water supply limited; residents urged to conserve
City continues emergency efforts to restore water flow at Big Island
SANDUSKY — City crews have been working all day to break through heavy ice and restore water flow at the intake pipes serving the Big Island Water Works plant, according to a news release.
“Due to current critical conditions, the City is not able to take in new raw water at this time,” the city said in an update. “All water use is being supplied from water already stored at the plant.”
Water use restrictions remain in effect. Residents in Sandusky and throughout Erie County are asked to continue reducing non-essential water use to help extend the available supply. City crews are actively pursuing multiple solutions and will continue working around the clock to restore intake flow as quickly as possible.
While crews are hopeful that conditions will improve, it is possible that the plant’s stored water supply could be exhausted before intake flow is restored. If that occurs, the City will immediately communicate next steps and any additional actions residents may need to take.
There is no issue with water quality at this time. The water currently being supplied remains safe to drink.
The City asks residents and businesses for their continued cooperation and conservation efforts.
Additional updates will be shared as conditions change at www.cityofsandusky.com.
