SANDUSKY — If you want to know what the Democrat running for the 89th House District seat thinks about abolishing property taxes, ask him yourself.
Easton Retzke will be at the Book Bar from 4-8 p.m. today, 2101 W. Perkins Avenue (the old YMCA building) in Sandusky, to meet voters, answer questions and share ideas.
Retzke, 23, of Sandusky, ran unopposed in the May primary for the Democratic nomination for the 89th House District seat. The last Democrat elected to the 89th District seat is former state Rep. Chris Redfern, who was defeated by Steve Kraus in 2014.
At one time a “safe” seat for Democrats, gerrymandering has flipped it to being “safe” for Republicans. Retzke’s opponent is Erie County Treasurer Caleb Stidham, 29, who is from Huron. The 89th House race features the two most youthful candidates in memory and possibly ever for the district and maybe for the Statehouse.

Candidate Profile: Who is Easton Retzke?
Retzke is a candidate who want to represent the working-class and work for economic relief, local governance, and neighborhood stability. He rejects national party rhetoric and is anchoring his platform directly to the day-to-day pressures facing families across Erie, Ottawa, and Huron counties.
Retzke’s overarching goal, according to his priority list, is to shift state priorities away from corporate loopholes and back toward basic public needs—protecting family farms, repairing aging infrastructure, safeguarding clean water, and lowering costs for everyday residents.
At the heart of Retzke’s platform is a focus on community stability and financial relief. To combat rising living costs, he advocates for targeted property tax relief for senior citizens and long-time homeowners, statutory caps on sudden tax spikes, and strict limits on institutional private equity firms acquiring local housing inventory. By pairing housing protections with practical proposals to lower healthcare costs and expand workforce training—such as trade apprenticeships through regional vocational centers like EHOVE—Retzke aims to ensure working families can afford to build their lives in Northern Ohio.
A central theme of Retzke’s candidacy is institutional accountability and local self-determination. He champions a “fix-it-first” approach to regional infrastructure that prioritizes local road maintenance, bridge repairs, and flood mitigation over state-backed megaprojects. Concurrently, he calls for increased state transparency through measures like the JobsOhio Transparency Act, stricter ethics rules for state officials, and protections for local home-rule decision-making.
