COLUMBUS — State Representative D.J. Swearingen is exiting the Statehouse after seven years on Sunday to take a job with the Trump administration.
Swearingen, R-Huron, announced his intention to leave state government when he asked that his name be removed ballot in September. He was appointed to the seat after former Rep. Steve Arndt retired in 2019 and was elected 2020 and re-elected in 2022 and 2024.
On Monday Swearingen started his new job as Senior Counsel in the National Fraud Enforcement Division at the U.S. Department of Justice. In this role, he will support the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud.
Swearingen released a statement reflecting on his tenure in the General Assembly and outlining his transition into federal law enforcement:
“It has been the professional privilege of a lifetime to represent the people of the 89th House District,” Swearingen said.
Regarding his upcoming position at the Department of Justice, Swearingen is enthusiastic
“I am looking forward to serving in this new role and bringing to justice those who would seek to loot hard-working Americans,” he said in the news release.

The president is set to hit more competitive territory on Saturday in Ohio, a state he won with 55% of the vote in the 2024 election but where Senator Jon Husted now faces a close re-election race. Trump will also rally on Monday in Nebraska, where Republicans are facing a challenging House race in Omaha and a Senate race that has shown signs in recent days of tightening.
