NORWALK — Family members — including Amanda Dean’s four sons — were in the courthouse Monday for what was scheduled as the last pre-trial hearing for her suspected killer, Fred Reer.

Scheduled for 2:30 p.m., the hearing never happened. Instead, Dean family members met with prosecutors and the state investigator who arrested Reer for more than an hour in a second-floor conference room, leading to speculation that there could be a plea deal in the works. Family members had no comment after leaving the courthouse.

Reer is charged with murder, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse for allegedly killing Amanda Dean, 36, on July 11, 2017. For more than five years, Huron County Sheriff Todd Corbin refused to investigate Dean’s disappearance. Corbin finally asked the state crime lab to investigate it after her family amped up pressure in November 2022, demanding that Corbin show “proof of life,” or find out what happened to Amanda.

Don’t tell anyone, anything

Corbin stopped talking with the press after that, complaining that news coverage was not accurate, although he did not provide information about his concerns or any detail about what he believed was incorrectly reported. He did make some comments on social media, however, often invoking his Christian values.

“I want everyone to read this and know the truth. I am truly a man of faith. I believe in God in heaven and consequences for bad decisions,” Corbin wrote in a Facebook post in August 2023. “No person on God’s earth is perfect. If you cut me, then I will bleed. I am no different than anyone else. You’ve made numerous attacks on my character, my professionalism, my decisions.”
