Family celebration on island turns suddenly tragic
PUT-IN-BAY — What was meant to be a weekend celebration on South Bass Island turned into an unthinkable tragedy early Thursday, when 39-year-old Robert “Rob” Russell was shot and killed inside Mr. Ed’s Bar & Grille.
The family had traveled to Put-in-Bay to mark a major milestone.
“We were there to celebrate his 40th birthday, which would have been today,” his widow, Lindsey Russell, said in a written statement. “I know I won’t be able to say everything perfectly, and I don’t think words could ever capture the depth of this loss. Rob was so much more than a husband and father. He was a constant presence, a source of strength, a comforting hand, a helping hand, a perseverer, a man of unwavering faith, and a father who intentionally led and loved his family and children toward Christ every single day.”
Sudden
According to Put-in-Bay police, the shooting occurred just after midnight Thursday inside Mr. Ed’s Bar & Grille on Delaware Avenue. Officers and Put-in-Bay EMS located Russell suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts at the scene, he succumbed to his injuries. No other injuries were reported.
A multi-agency response was immediately initiated, involving the Put-in-Bay Police Department, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, the Ottawa County Major Crimes Unit, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), and the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Suspect in custody; $1M bond set
At approximately 3:40 a.m. Thursday, Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies apprehended a suspect. Authorities identified him as Colton Smith, 21, of Brownstown, Michigan, who has been formally charged with murder.
During an initial court appearance Thursday afternoon, a judge set Smith’s bond at $1 million (10% permitted). A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 31 at 1 p.m. Law enforcement confirmed that no additional suspects are being sought in connection with the case.
Motive
The ongoing investigation is led by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and the Ottawa County Major Crimes Unit, with public inquiries directed to the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office.
Ottawa County Prosecutor James VanEerten stated that investigators currently do not believe the suspect and victim knew each other prior to the incident. Detectives continue to process evidence and interview witnesses to determine a motive.
