SANDUSKY — The search is over. During a regular meeting today (March 10, 2026), the Sandusky City Schools Board of Education voted to appoint Dr. Luther E. Johnson, Jr. as the district’s next Superintendent.

Dr. Johnson, a veteran educator with three decades of experience, arrives at a pivotal time for Sandusky. He isn’t just bringing a resume; he’s bringing a reputation for “leading with love” and a track record of stabilizing large, complex Ohio school districts.
The Right Pedigree
Dr. Johnson’s background is a roadmap of Ohio’s most challenging and rewarding educational landscapes. An Ohio State University alum with a doctorate from Youngstown State University, his career has spanned from the halls of Akron Buchtel to leadership roles in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and, most recently, serving as Regional Superintendent for Columbus City Schools.
“We are thrilled to secure a leader of Dr. Johnson’s caliber,” stated Board President Martha Murray. “His deep roots in Ohio education and his track record in regional leadership make him a great fit for our students and staff.”
Beyond the Resume: Stability and “Heart”
In Sandusky, where “Blue Streak Pride” is a lifestyle rather than a slogan, the Board emphasized that Dr. Johnson was chosen for his ability to build partnerships that go beyond the classroom.
Board Vice-President Ebony Sizemore said that while his technical skills in data analysis and district operations are proven, it was his approach to leadership that stood out. “Dr. Johnson values building relationships and leading with love,” Sizemore said. “I am confident his vision will move our district forward.”
What’s Next for the Blue Streaks?
Dr. Johnson isn’t wasting time. While he officially takes the helm following his tenure in Columbus, the Board confirmed he will be available for transition and onboarding activities over the coming months to ensure a seamless handoff.
The New Superintendent’s Take:
“I am excited about the opportunity to become the next Superintendent of Sandusky City Schools, a district poised for continued success,” Dr. Johnson stated. “I look forward to working in a city known for its strong traditions and commitment to supporting and educating all of our Blue Streak Scholars.”
Stay Tuned: As Dr. Johnson begins his onboarding, we’ll be looking for his first “Town Hall” dates to see how he plans to integrate his vision for “quality teaching and learning” with Sandusky’s unique local traditions.
