SANDUSKY — It’s been more than a year since contractors at the Sandusky State Theatre walked away from the project amid cost overruns, disputes and change orders.
But work could restart as early as this week, according to Sandusky city commissioner Jeff Krabill, who attended a meeting last week at the theatre.
Krabill provided this update during Monday’s Sandusky city commission meeting.
“We’re going to see a lot of activity at that site fairly quickly because the company that holds the bond on the construction has come to an agreement with the SST board. All parties are in agreement, a contractor has been identified to do the work, RJR out of the Cleveland area, I think.
“They’re going to basically be completing the project originally part of the ‘not to exceed’ (contract) budget. What you’re going to see on the backside of the theatre is all to be closed in and the second theatre is all going to be built. That structure put up there’s some work that remains in the main theatre that is going to be done.
“There’s still some open questions, still some conversations that have to take place between the theatre board and the construction bond guarantor and that is going fwd in parallel with what is going to be taking place over here now. There are several questions that they’re still not able to answer: One is when is it all going to be done and how soon is the theatre going to be open? That remains uncertain because of remaining uncertainties in the negotiations. The question about what added costs might be is also an open question until all these negotiations are complete. The good news is we are going to see activity at the State Theatre and it is imminent.”
