MARGARETTA TWP. — Authorities on Friday came nearly face-to-face with the alleged scammers who have bilked elderly people statewide out of tens of thousands of dollars, including from a local couple’s life savings.

Outside the Dollar General Store, the male suspect caught wind Friday that authorities were zeroing in. He aborted and sprinted back to a vehicle in an adjacent parking lot, where a woman was waiting, ready to drive away. They high-tailed it out, peeling away as if they’d just hit a bank vault.

It was 3 p.m. Erie County sheriff’s deputies began pursuit. The getaway car reached speeds up to 100 mph, traveling south through the township and Oxford and Groton townships and in a southeasterly direction into Huron County, according to a witness.
