NORWALK — Fred Reer Jr. was sentenced on Monday to 14 years for the death of Amanda Dean—a woman the Huron County Sheriff spent six years denying was dead, all while refusing to investigate her disappearance.

Amanda Dean was killed in July 2017: Fred Reer Jr. was arrested in February 2024.

Monday was a day for justice, but a news conference that followed Reer’s sentencing hearing felt more like a choreographed defense of the status quo than a search for the truth.

In a recent exchange on social media, Amanda’s mother, Caroline Tokar, and sister, Shannon Dean, took issue with our reporting of the event. They pointed out that Daniel Kasaris (AG Special Prosecutor) and John Saraya (BCI Lead Investigator) were physically in the room. Our previous coverage highlighted how they “skipped” the news conference.
