The sentencing of Fred Reer Jr. for the 2017 killing of Amanda Dean should have been a moment of total transparency—a chance for the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) and the Attorney General’s office to explain how a murderer lived free for 2,190 days while the Huron County Sheriff’s Office looked the other way.
