SANDUSKY — You think it’s bad now? In six short years, if you rely on Social Security to pay your bills, you very well may get hit with a 17% to 23% reduction in benefits in 2032.
A COLA — in reverse. If your benefit about is $1,000 today, it could be reduced to $770.
For decades, “Social Security insolvency” was a distant warning—a problem for a future generation. As of March 2026, the future has arrived.
New projections from the Penn Wharton Budget Model and the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) now indicate that the Social Security Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) Trust Fund is on track for depletion by 2032.
Without legislative intervention, this doesn’t mean the checks stop, but it does mean a “benefit cliff”: an automatic reduction to approximately 77% to 83% of scheduled benefits.
For the thousands of Erie County residents living on a fixed income, a 20% cut isn’t just a budget adjustment—it’s a catastrophe.
Double squeeze: Fixed incomes vs. healthcare inflation
While the federal government announced a 2.8% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2026, that “raise” is already being swallowed by the skyrocketing cost of staying alive.
Medicare Part B Hikes: For the first time in history, the standard Medicare Part B monthly premium has exceeded $200, rising to $202.90 this year.
The “Health Care Gap”: While Social Security adjustments hover around 2–3%, long-term healthcare inflation for retirees is currently projected at 5.8%.
Fixed Income Erosion: For a typical senior, healthcare expenses are now projected to consume between 84% and 104% of their total lifetime Social Security benefits.
As the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” of 2025 and recent federal shutdowns have shifted the fiscal landscape, the question for Northwest Ohio is simple: What is the plan to protect the “earned right” of retirement?
