SANDUSKY — Voters pushed back against new taxes in Sandusky and other local school districts defeating tax measures that local school officials say are desperately needed.
Sandusky voters rejected a 4.9-mill levy by a 55-45% margin, 4,236 against with 3,414 residents voting in favor of it. The school board and district treasurer are projecting deficit spending without significant cuts in programming and personnel if revenue sources can’t be found.
State legislators have been defunding public education by transferring money to charter schools, school choice and school voucher programs that benefit private schools at the expense of public schools. Meanwhile, there has been a tax revolt involving Ohioans who support an initiative to repeal property taxes, altogether.
The school board's next scheduled meeting is at 6 p.m. Tuesday, (November 10) at the board offices, 407 Decatur St. It's likely the board will begin to consider what cuts must be made to address budget shortfalls.
