SANDUSKY — It’s unknown why U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur opted out of a planned Social Security forum on Thursday, but the decision resulted the forum’s cancellation.
Serving Our Seniors announced Tuesday the forum, “The Future of Social Security & Medicare: To be depleted in 6 years,” would not take place.
Serving Our Seniors Director Sue Daugherty Kaptur’s office notified the organization that the congresswoman would be unable to attend, and it triggered the decision to cancel the event. Following Kaptur’s withdrawal, key panelist Maya McGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, also withdrew from the event.

Nearly 200 people had reservations to attend the Q&A forum at the UAW Hall on Hayes Avenue. Serving Our Seniors represent more than 20,000 Erie County residents age 60 and older dedicated to maintaining successful independent living for seniors.
Daugherty said she hopes to reschedule the event for October. If the forum is revived, organizers plan to invite Kaptur, McGuineas, and U.S. Sens. Jon Husted and Bernie Moreno to participate in the panel. Husted and Moreno ignored invitations to the event for months, failing to acknowledge the invites. Finally, both senators declines, saying they couldn’t fit the date in their schedules.
Daugherty said updates regarding a potential rescheduled date will be released as details are finalized.
Kaptur’s staff did not immediately respond to inquiries about the reason she decided to cancel attending the forum, which was being cosponsored by StayTunedSandusky.com. Kaptur was a passenger in a vehicle that was hit broadside by another vehicle on Aug. 1. Kaptur was hospitalized after the accident but there haven’t been updates since.
It’s not known if her injuries from the accident are related to the decision to cancel.
