Sandusky's civil rights icon says voices matter, votes matter

SANDUSKY — The city’s forever famous gay marriage advocate was one of about 1,000 demonstrators who attended the “No kings” demonstration Saturday in front of the Sandusky Mall, one of of thousands of protests against President Donald Trump across Ohio, the nation and internationally.

Jim Obergefell was lead plaintiff in the landmark Supreme Court case Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage across the United States in 2015.

“We need every single person who’s eligible to vote, to vote, in every single election. That’s the only way we can create a country that actually lives up to its ideals, a country where every person has a say. because when you don’t vote you are allowing other people to determine your worth, your value, as a human being,” Obergefell said. “Everyone needs to vote and everyone needs to be involved and be educated about what’s happening in our nation.”
