SANDUSKY — “We don’t schedule that far in advance.”
That was the response from the offices of U.S. Senators Bernie Moreno when asked to meet with Erie County seniors to discuss the future of Social Security. His counterpart in the Senate, Sen. Jon Husted’s staff, hasn’t got responded or even acknowledged the invite in months.
One Ohio Senator provides a bullshit answer about one of the largest looming affordability questions there is; the other one doest even bother sending any response, at all.
The problem? The “time bomb” for Social Security and Medicare reserves is only six years away. If Congress doesn’t act, the math is brutal: a potential 25% to 30% cut in benefits for 22,117 local residents who earned them.
In this full 16-minute interview, I sit down with Sue Daugherty, Director of Serving Our Seniors. We dig into the numbers, the upcoming June 25th Social Security Forum, and why some politicians are willing to face the music while others stay in the bunker.
Highlights of the discussion:
The Boomer Math: Why fewer workers and more retirees mean the reserves are disappearing faster than expected.
The “Unsinkable” Advocate: Sue talks about her own perspective as a “soon-to-be retiree” and why this isn’t just a professional issue—it’s personal.
The Demand: How Erie County residents can use a simple “Form Letter” to demand that their representatives show up on June 25.
